What's Your Excuse?

Exercise...

We all know the benefit of activity-we know that it can boost metabolism, improve our moods, create an overall sense of well-being and prevent certain diseases, but we come up with all of those excuses as to why we can't exercise.  Why do we make these excuses?  What can we do to get past those excuses?  Let's spend some time talking ways to get move forward.

Personal Story

After chemotherapy, after radiation therapy, after medication after medication, I finally decided I needed to do something about taking care of myself.  Steve and I started walking in Australia and we continued when we got home we continued walking in Pollock Pines and it was tough.  I threw up, I passed out, I used my inhalers, I cursed Steve but each day I went a little further.  I walked and walked and then I started running and I never looked back...Were there setbacks?  Yes!!!  Were there days when I didn't want to exercise, are there still days when I would rather stay in bed?  Yes!!!  Are any of these your excuses?

It's too hot or too cold!
I have bad knees.
I don't have time.
I get sweaty.
I'm too tired.
I don't like it.
I don't like doing it alone.
I don't like doing it in public.
It's boring.
Gyms are expensive.

Come to the meeting this week and we will help bust these excuses.

All or nothing thinking has no place here...just because you may not able to squeeze in all the required exercise doesn't mean you shouldn't get moving as much as you can.  Take the stairs..pace while you are on the phone!

The American College of Sports Medicine recommends at least 30 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise five days a week or 20 minutes of high-intensive exercise three days a week.  They also suggest a comprehensive activity plan that includes 30-45 minutes of vigorous activity three days a week for cardio-respiratory fitness regular stretching for joint flexibility, and resistance training to maintain muscular strength and endurance.

While there are some obstacles which are health-related, others may simply be excuses.

Why is it hard to admit that our reasons for not exercising may be excuses?  I didn't want to admit that I couldn't do something...so if I didn't try I wouldn't fail!!  What I had to learn about myself was that if I didn't try, I would never know.  Step by step I learned that I could walk, I could run, I could train and after a while I really enjoyed it.  I can get sweaty and then I can take a shower, I had bad knees, but the more I worked out and the more weight I lost, the better my knees felt.  It could be boring but I found that I loved working out to music and that worked for me, I do enjoy working out by myself, it is my time to enjoy myself.

Think about your reasons and let's talk about them on Thursday....can't wait to see you..

Until then, here is a poem I found in the Oprah magazine..it truly described my journey and I thought you might find yourself in this poem also.

The Journey - Mary Oliver

One day you finally knew
what you had to do, and began,
thought voices around you
kept shouting
their bad advice --
though the whole house
began to tremble
and you felt the old tug
at your ankles.
"Mend my life!"
each voice cried.
But you didn't stop
You knew what you had to do,
thought the wind pried
with its stiff fingers
at the very foundations--
though their melancholy
was terrible.
It was already late
enough, and a wild night,
and the road full of fallen
branches and stones.
But little by little,
as you left their voices behind,
the stars began to burn
through the sheets of clouds,
and there was a new voice,
which you slowly
recognized as your own,
that you kept you company
as you strode deeper and deeper
into the world,
determined to do
the only thing you could do --
determined to save
the only life you could save.

Until Thursday,

Carol

Relationships in Your Weight Loss Journey

Today is Mother's Day and I want to say Happy Mother's Day to all of you!!!  Holidays (even those that Hallmark and the florists come up with) give everyone a chance to get together, celebrate and enjoy the day.  Usually food is involved, but so are our emotions.

Some of the things I hope you are learning from your Weight Watchers journey is that there are a lot of times the hunger we feel is not really in our stomachs, it is in our heads.

How often has someone told you to eat something to make you feel better?  We all remember the promise our parents told us if we had to get our tonsils out.  "You can have all the ice cream you want!"  "You're wasting away, you need to eat!"  Have a bad day..."Drown your sorrows in _____ (you fill in the blank).

I think the thing I have learned from my journey is that I don't have to listen to those things anymore.  I am free to decide what I want to eat, when I eat and when to make good choices and if I do need something extra, I can have it.  I just can't have it every day!!

What I have found is that I don't live or lose weight in a bubble.  The people around me, my loved ones, my friends, neighbors and my co-workers can either help or hinder my weight loss.  Some people may intentionally or unintentionally try to torpedo my efforts-because they may not like losing their eating or drinking buddies or because they may feel threatened by the way I am changing.

We all have to learn which relationships and social networks present challenges or roadblocks to our success.  Find out who those saboteurs are and learn how to assert ourselves and gain the support we need.  Easier said than done but this week's meeting will help you learn to understand that in order to lose weight you must learn how to manage problematic relationships and in some cases, seek out or create new ones.

It truly is important to have those supportive friendships so you can ask for help.

I think the best quote I have to fully encapsulate what it is about is the following quote by Stephen Covey, a personal development author and speaker.

"Our ultimate freedom is the right and power to decide how anybody or anything outside ourselves will affect us."

Remember it is up to you...I am here for you!!!  If you have questions or concerns, let me know...

Until Thursday,

Carol

Variety is the Spice of Life

BOREDOM

It's easy to fall into food ruts.  After all, we know how to track familiar foods - no looking things up, no meals to plan.  Plus they are safe and comfortable.  But eating the same foods over and over can get boring-and boring is not Good!  It can lead to feelings of deprivation (and we all know what that leads to!)  When we stick to the same things every day, we miss out on the nutrients our bodies need.

Let's talk about how we can define strategies to avoid boredom, how can we spice up our menus.  If you are coming to the meeting this week, bring boxes or lists of the foods that help you get through the week.

We need to make sure we are aware of the signs of boredom..the food blahs...you know, chicken, rice and a vegetable one night and rice, chicken and a vegetable the next night...makes you want to run right out and order a pizza after too many nights of the same thing!  We are so fortunate that we can try different foods, different fruits and vegetables depending on the time of the season.

Shake it up!!!!!  After all if everything stayed the same, life would be pretty Boring!!

Here is a Poem I thought was appropriate...

Choices

Some people sit - some people try;
Some people laugh - some people cry;

Some people will - some people won't
Some people do - some people don't.

Some people believe and develop a plan;
Some people doubt - never think that they can;

Some people face hurdles and give it their best;
Some people back down when faced with a test

Some people complain of their miserable lot;
Some people are thankful for all that they've got;

And when it's all over - when it comes to an end-
Some people lose out and some people win.

We all have a choice - we all have a say;
We are spectators in life or we get in and play;

Whichever we choose - how we handle life's game;
The choices are ours - no one else to blame.

Until Thursday,

The Secret of Weight Loss

Shhhh....Want to know the secret to weight loss?

It's not a magic pill, it's not a magic drink, it doesn't guarantee to boost your metabolism, it doesn't cost a million dollars, but if you follow it and you really do it every day, you will see a significant weight loss.

What is this golden key to weight loss?  How can you get it?

It is really rather simple, it doesn't take a lot of time, but it does require a commitment.  It is tracking, writing down everything you eat and being serious about it.

Which of these most fit you?
  • Sort of Sam ( partial tracker)
  • Amnesiac Anne (forgets some items)
  • Precise Paul (great tracker..tracks additional details..advanced tracker)
  • Always Tracks Alan (lists every BLT (bite, lick and taste)
  • Healthy Helen (records "healthy food" only)
  • Write it later Rita (intends to write later)
  • Daytime Don (tracks well all day but stops at night)
When I started my weight loss journey I was the Precise Paul...I tracked everything, with details.  As I continued on my journey I started to become Sort of Sam....and I started seeing my weight loss decreasing...once I got "back to basics" I started losing again.

Why am I talking about this today?  Well, this past weekend we celebrated Vara's (our granddaughter) sixth birthday.  She wanted a chocolate cake with chocolate frosting (home made) and lots of frosting!!!  Did I tell you that my next favorite dessert after cheesecake is chocolate cake with chocolate frosting?

Today we celebrated Steve's Birthday by going to his favorite restaurant (Luis's) where we feasted on chips, salsa and tortillas, and yes a couple of beers...Needless to say I am "back to basics" beginning tomorrow.

That is the beauty of Weight Watchers, no matter what today was like, there is always tomorrow and I know that by tracking everything I eat and by tracking my exercise as well, I will be fine.  Life is not defined by eating the same thing every day, life is learning what I need to do to be healthy.  By tracking what I eat and my activity, I know where I am every day, even if I have to use my weekly points plus!!!

As a Weight Watchers leader I will let you in on a little secret.....if you are not seeing the weight loss you expect, track everything you eat and everything you do for at least two days, I promise you that the next week you will see a difference, but it's up to you to REALLY track!!!

Enjoy your week and I will see you on Thursday!!! Don't miss the meeting!!!

It's not a Diet, it's a Lifestyle!!!

So often I hear people say "When I am at my goal weight, I can enjoy my life again." or "I only have five more pounds and I can go back to enjoying my life."

I too believed that was what would happen to me, but what I finally realized is that Weight Watchers is all about lifestyle.  I think one of the most powerful aspects of the PointsPlus plan is that it allows us to enjoy our life.  If someone had told me that I would never have the opportunity to have a piece of cheesecake, a glass of wine or a chocolate bar again for the rest of my life, I would have run from the room screaming!!! What you have to understand is that you are making a lifestyle change that will stay with you for the remainder of your life. Fad diets do not work -- yo-yo'ing does not work. What Weight Watchers teaches all of us is that when you make the decision to change your lifestyle, it is a change that you will pursue for the rest of your life. Is that worth it to be at a weight you desire, and to be in a physical and mental space you desire? You Bet!!

Weight Watchers taught me strategies for avoiding feeling deprived, both physically and mentally.  I realized that only when I feel satisfied - in both my mind and my body - can the weight loss process be sustainable for the long-term.

How can I do this?
  • I spice up my menu by trying new recipes and new foods
  • I use smaller plates and bowls
  • I have learned to eat mindfully - I enjoy my food instead of wolfing it down while watching TV, checking e-mail or driving (I can't remember the last time I went through a fast food drive in!!!)
  • I appreciate my surroundings. I have surrounded myself with great companions and people with a winning lifestyle and attitude.
  • I take my time when I am eating because it takes my brain 20 minutes for it to register the signal that my stomach is full!
I used to equate "trying to lose weight" with "limiting the amount" of food that I could eat.  I have learned that I don't have to think these thoughts. You can carefully track what you eat and still enjoy the foods you like.

Finally, always remember that you can indulge yourself.  You can eat the foods you love -- whether you want a brownie in the breakroom, your favorite pasta dish for a night on the town or a great omelette on the weekend.  That's what your weekly PointsPlus Allowance are for!!!

What has perceptions about Weight Watchers have changed since you joined?

Come join us this Thursday night for St. Patrick's Day in Placerville!!!  You will love the meeting!!!

Until Thursday,

Carol
