Our Parents Were Right

How many of you remember getting up in the morning to go to school and coming out of the bedroom to breakfast?  Mom, Dad, Grandma or whomever always said "Make sure you eat breakfast before you leave!!"  We would scarf our breakfast down and run out of the house on to our next adventure....

Fast forward 10, 20 or 30 years and we get up in the morning, grab a cup of coffee and begin our adventure be it work, school, or getting our loved ones off on their own adventures.  If we are lucky we will grab a pastry, a cereal bar or throw a piece of fruit next to us to eat as we drive to our destination.  We all have excuses:

  • I'm not hungry when I first wake up
  • I don't have time
  • I hate cereal and eggs

Research has shown that people who skip breakfast may not be as successful with weight loss as people who eat breakfast regularly.  Why?  Well, what happens in the middle of the morning when you are starving?  You snack!!!  And what do you snack on?  Anything that is available!!!

With a little planning you can make all of those excuses go away...If you're not hungry first thing in the morning, try a fruit yogurt smoothie.  Boil an egg the night before and try it with string cheese and an apple or a packet of oatmeal.  If you are not crazy about breakfast foods, have dinner for breakfast, try cheese and a tomato on a whole wheat English muffin, low fat burrito with cheese, beans or chicken!

Look at those power foods, try something new but make sure you eat breakfast.  Breakfast is critical to controlling hunger and providing energy throughout the day.  It really is the most important meal of the day.

On a Personal Note -
I went to the doctor last Monday and I am having surgery to remove a bone that has impaled itself in my posterior tibular tendon on Friday May 27th.  I will be in a cast and on crutches for four weeks, after that I will be in an air cast (boot) and crutches for another four weeks and then in the boot for another eight weeks.  Needless to say my summer will be spent rehabbing my ankle.  What is the saying "Life happens when you are making plans?"  This is what happened.

I will be working hard to get back to running, I am still hoping to make it into the Nike Women's Half Marathon in October and will plan my rehab accordingly.

Sometimes you are given a situation that makes you stop and smell the roses, I guess this is why I have an extra bone in my ankle that broke...to stop and smell the roses...So if you have recommendations of movies, books or magazine articles you think I should watch or read, send them along...I'll have the time!!!

I think this poem says it the best!!!

DON’T QUIT

When you’ve eaten too much and you can’t write it down
And you feel like the biggest failure in town
When you want to give up just because you gave in,
So What !! You went over your points just a bit
It’s your next move that counts…. So don’t you dare quit!

It’s a moment of truth, it’s an attitude change.
It’s learning the skills to get back in your range.
It’s telling yourself, You’ve done great up till now.
You can take on this challenge and beat it somehow!
It’s part of your journey toward reaching your goal.
You’re still gonna make it, just stay in control.

To stumble and fall is not a disgrace
If you summon the will to get back in the race!
But, so often the strugglers, when losing their grip, just throw
In the towel and continue to slip.
And learn all too late when the damage is done,
That the race was not over…. They still could have won!

Lifestyle change can be awkward and slow,
But facing each challenge will help you grow.
“Success” is “failing” turned inside out,
It’s the bright silver tint in a gray cloud of doubt.
So, when you’re pushed to the brink, just refuse to submit,
If you bite it, you write it…But don’t you dare Quit.!!!

Until Thursday,

Carol

  1. After two 65 point days in a row - that poem is just what I needed to hear this morning! (and yes I did track everything that is why I know I have two 65 point days! LOL!!) Today will be better - and I will get to the gym to try and work off some of the negative number I currently have in my tracker. You rock Carol!! Good luck with your surgery!

  3. One of my all time favorite pick me up movies, "Joe vs. the Volcano". Tom Hanks and Abe Vigoda.

Most favorite latest book, "Death by Black Hole and other Cosmic Quandries" by Neil DeGrasse Tyson. My favorite word comes from this book! Spagettified.

Good luck with your surgery. Can't wait to see you next!!
